Student desertion: A study in an Intercultural Community University

Abstract

This study has analyzed the factors of student desertion in a university context. It is a quantitative research based on an “Ex Post Facto” design. The analysis variables were: age, gender, ethnicity, marital status, work status, number of siblings, number of children, place of origin, study (high school), type of career and the semester in which the career was abandoned. The main results show that the research, the dropout rate was 34% and the main factors that affected university student dropout were economic, family environment, academic background, motivational factor, self-esteem, vocational and institutional academic; Despite the fact that 47% of the deserters dropped out, they managed to achieve academic foundations and a university technical degree, which makes them competitive in the labor market.
